Laughnosis Online Training Course
This five hour course introduces the concepts
and techniques of Laughnosis -- the antidote to Chronic Seriosity, a condition also known as Fun Deficiency
or Grumpy-Pants-Frowny-Face Syndrome. The material
in this online video course grew out of several years of practical experience for both hosts who discussed
this topic together for countless hours, culminating
in The Little Book of Laughnosis and a
series of live Laughnosis trainings.

Who is this course for?

Hypnotists will experience how laughing on purpose
can bypass the critical faculty. More than just useful
as a type of induction, intentional laughter is a skill set
rich with built-in health, social, spiritual, and
professional benefits and lessons.
Laughter professionals, including Laughter Yoga Leaders,
will learn how to use hypnotic concepts to enhance
laughter sessions as well as how laughing can be
used to benefit participants long after the
physical effects of a laughter class have faded.
Coaches, therapists, body workers, and other
heart-centered healers will learn to add fun to helping
and being helped. You'll take away an understanding
of how to intuitively improvise new techniques
using concepts and exercises from Laughter Yoga.
And you will increase your ability to ethically
influence clients and patients using basic premises
and language strategies of hypnosis and
Neuro-Linguistic Programming.
This training course, featuring 17 videos and
21 downloadable audios, covers the inside-out model
of laughter, the mind/body science of unconditional
laughter, the presuppositions of laughter in a
therapeutic or coaching setting, concepts and
techniques from the global Laughter Yoga
movement, creating your own laughter techniques for changework, and adding joy to helping and being helped.

Laughnosis Training Course Summary

  • We’re all born with the ability to laugh.
  • Babies laugh before they can speak or understand humor.
  • But as we get older, we laugh far less.
  • Life gets more serious and being playful seems frivolous.
  • Yet science shows physical and mental benefits from laughing.
  • That’s why people everywhere practice intentional laughter daily.
  • The body doesn't distinguish laughing on purpose or at humor.
  • Both are beneficial, but only one is a genuine workout!

Module 1: What is Laughnosis?

Hosts Dave Berman and James Hazlerig provide an overview of the Laughnosis course ahead, including:

- Who is this for?
- What is it about?
- What’s the difference between a cook and a chef?
- Why can’t you raise your eyebrows and frown simultaneously?
- Joining the Aha and Haha moments into one.

Module 2: 7 Ways to Beat the Bouncer

In this module we learn seven categories of hypnotic induction, or ways to facilitate entering into hypnosis, with each category compared to a different way of persuading a bouncer to let you into a bar.

Module 3: Joyful Breathing

One of Dave’s favorite sayings is “Laughter is the sound of joyful breathing.” We’re breathing all the time anyway so we may as well make a joyful sound! In this module, we learn about starting the day with intentional laughter, using the vowels of the English language to make laughter sounds; introducing the “smile string,” and discovering the various laughs that come from different parts of the body.

Module 4: Laughnosis For Stress

Laughter is a great stress-reliever, so we explore some of the stress reduction techniques from James’s book, The Little Book of Laughnosis, including Stress Ball Laughter, Bilaughteral Stimulation, Gibberish, and Laugh Talk.

Module 5: Neuroplasticity

Neurons that fire together wire together, so in this module, we hear the alarm clock story, the egg story, and how these convinced James that Dave had rewired his brain through the daily practice of intentional laughter.

Module 6: Laughnosis For Change

Because of neuroplasticity, laughter is a powerful tool for personal change. In this module, we learn specific exercises and techniques to use laughter to change our reactions, including Red Light/Green Light and Chore Laughter. James and Dave both tell about times when they used laughter as a kind of anchor collapse or swish pattern. Finally, we look at laughter as a panic attack intervention strategy.

Module 7: NLP Presuppositions, Part 1

NLP stands for Neuro-Linguistic Programming. It is the study of the structure of subjective experience. NLP is also thought of as the language structure of hypnosis. The foundational concepts of NLP are referred to as presuppositions. These are ideas treated as true because it is useful to do so, even though the ideas can’t necessarily be empirically tested or scientifically proven. In this module, Dave and James review some of the most common NLP presuppositions.

Module 8: NLP Presuppositions, Part 2

Continuation of the discussion on NLP presuppositions, and quotes from hypnosis teachers Melissa Tiers and Richard Nongard.

Module 9: Laughter Presuppositions, Part 1

Inspired by the NLP presuppositions, this module explores ideas about laughter that it is useful to treat as true, even though these ideas can’t be empirically tested or scientifically proven either. Special thanks to the students from Dave’s first live Laughnosis training in Melbourne, Australia -- Merv Neal, Ros Ben-Moshe, Bron Roberts, Adelheid MacKenzie, and Heather Joy.

Module 10: Laughter Presuppositions, Part 2

Continuation of the discussion on presuppositions of laughter.

Module 11: The Art of Suggestion

When someone is hypnotized they are more receptive to suggestions, but they will not do anything they don’t want to do, or which goes against their ethics or morals. That’s why it is important to know how to give suggestions effectively. This module includes instruction on the use of pacing and leading, being artfully vague, distinguishing direct and indirect suggestions, and using embedded commands. The bonus audio from Edinburgh is meant to be listened to following this module. There is also a corresponding .pdf to help you track the techniques and language patterns used in the audio.

Module 12: Yoga Nidra

The ancient tradition of Yoga Nidra is a process of scanning the body very similar to the progressive muscle relaxation induction used in hypnosis. Laughnosis recognizes that laughter itself is a way to enter hypnosis and so this final module looks at how the conclusion of a Laughter Yoga session (or other more traditional forms of yoga) represents an opportunity for the facilitator to deliver beneficial suggestions because people are primed and ready to receive them at that point.

All the video modules above also include downloadable audio versions.

"Laughnosis changed the Laughter AND Coaching games for me. It made me more aware of HOW to use laughter for transformation and not just through taught techniques. Through becoming ‘laughnotic’ or ‘Becoming The Chef (who can cook without a recipe)’ I discovered I have the knowledge and creativity to create powerful techniques/exercises on the fly."
